5 Signs You Need to Upgrade Your Home Internet Plan

Is your internet slowing you down? Here are five clear signs that it's time to upgrade your broadband plan — and what to do about it.

5 Signs You Need to Upgrade Your Home Internet Plan

We've all been there — the video call freezes mid-sentence, Netflix buffers during the climax of a show, or a file upload that should take 30 seconds crawls along for 10 minutes. These aren't random inconveniences. They're signs that your current internet plan can no longer keep up with your household's needs.

Here are five clear signals that it's time to upgrade, and what you can do about it.

1. Videos Buffer Even on Standard Quality

If you're seeing the dreaded loading spinner on YouTube or Netflix — especially when you've dropped the quality down to 720p — your plan's bandwidth simply isn't enough. For HD streaming, you need at least 5–10Mbps per stream. For 4K, that jumps to 25Mbps per stream.

If you have three family members each watching different shows simultaneously, you need 75Mbps just for the TVs — before counting phones, laptops, and smart devices.

The fix: Upgrade to at least UniVerse 300 (300Mbps/RM129 per month) for a household that streams regularly on multiple screens.

2. Work-From-Home Video Calls Keep Dropping

Remote work has become a permanent reality for millions of Malaysians. If your Zoom calls are choppy, your voice cuts out, or you keep getting kicked off Google Meet, it's almost certainly an internet problem — not a software one.

A typical HD video call requires 3–4Mbps upload speed. The problem? Many older or entry-level plans prioritise download speed and offer very slow upload speeds. Check your plan's upload speed — if it's below 20Mbps and you have multiple WFH users at home, you're going to have problems.

The fix: Look for a plan with a solid upload speed. UniVerse 300 offers 50Mbps upload, while UniVerse 500 gives you 100Mbps upload.

3. Your Internet Slows to a Crawl at Night

If your connection is fast in the morning but unusable by 8pm, you might initially blame your ISP. But often the real culprit is that your plan speed is too low for the number of people now sharing it in the evening.

Modern households have an average of 10–15 connected devices: smart TVs, phones, laptops, tablets, smart speakers, security cameras, and game consoles. If all of these are active simultaneously on a 100Mbps connection, the math simply doesn't work out.

The fix: Count your devices and multiply the number of active users by at least 30–50Mbps to find the plan you actually need.

4. Online Gaming Is Laggy and Frustrating

For gamers, there are two things that matter: speed and latency. If you're experiencing lag spikes, rubber-banding characters, or getting disconnected from game servers, a slow internet plan is likely to blame.

Competitive gaming (like Valorant, Mobile Legends, or CS2) doesn't require huge amounts of bandwidth — but it does need a stable, low-latency connection. If other household members are streaming or downloading while you're gaming, your connection will spike.

The fix: A higher-tier plan with more bandwidth means other users don't eat into your gaming connection. UniVerse 500 or above is ideal for households with active gamers.

5. You Keep Running Out of Speed for Smart Home Devices

If you have smart bulbs, security cameras, a smart doorbell, robot vacuums, smart speakers, and other IoT devices, they're all quietly consuming bandwidth — even when you're not actively using them. A 4K security camera alone can use 4–8Mbps when streaming.

As smart homes become more common in Malaysia, the number of connected devices per household is growing rapidly. Your internet plan may have been fine three years ago, but your home has gotten smarter since then.

The fix: If you have more than 10 smart devices alongside regular household usage, it's time to step up to at least a 500Mbps plan.
